New study: Losing weight can reduce and even heal atrial fibrillation

How can the risk of atrial fibrillation be reduced?

Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias. Those who are overweight can significantly reduce symptoms through weight loss. According to researchers from the University of Adelaide and the SA Health and Medical Research Institute, it is even possible to completely cure atrial fibrillation. At least that was shown by a study.

In their current study, scientists from the University of Adelaide and the SA Health and Medical Research Institute found that weight loss leads to reduced symptoms in atrial fibrillation.

What is atrial fibrillation?

A total of 355 participants were examined for the study, who suffered from obesity or overweight and were affected by atrial fibrillation. The researchers found that ten percent weight loss and the treatment and management of risk factors were directly related to the reversal of the course of the disease. Common symptoms of atrial fibrillation, one of the main causes of a stroke, include chest pain, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath, the scientists explain.

Weight loss of ten percent can reverse atrial fibrillation

The number of obese and overweight people has doubled in the past two decades. Australia is now one of the industrialized countries with the fattest inhabitants, the authors of the study explain. If such people want to avoid suffering from atrial fibrillation or a stroke, they should try to lose weight, the doctors advise. Even a 10 percent weight loss had a direct connection to reversing the progression of atrial fibrillation.

Obesity is associated with the progression of atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a progressive disease in which short, intermittent symptoms initially develop into a sustainable form of the disease, study author Melissa Middeldorp from the University of Adelaide explains in a press release. Obesity and various lifestyle factors are associated with the progression of atrial fibrillation. When overweight people lose weight, they experience fewer symptoms. As a result, they needed less intensive treatment, which nevertheless led to improved results.

Benefits of weight loss

With a record-breaking number of obese people in Australia and most high-income countries, this study gives hope that overweight people can gain a better quality of life and reduce their dependency on health services through weight loss, the researchers say.

Study results can save people's lives

The current investigation could help help millions of people with atrial fibrillation around the world, and possibly save many lives. The results of the study show that progressive progression of more severe forms of atrial fibrillation occurs in patients without weight loss, the scientists explain. (sb, as)
